Stephanus of Byzantium

Stephanus of Byzantium, born in the year five hundred and one, was a prominent figure in the Eastern Roman intellectual landscape. Renowned as a lexicographer, linguist, geographer, and mythographer, his contributions have left a lasting impact on the study of geography and language.

He is best known for his seminal work, the geographical dictionary entitled Ethnica (Ἐθνικά). Although only meager fragments of this important text have survived the passage of time, its significance is underscored by the existence of an epitome compiled by a figure named Hermolaus, whose identity remains largely unknown.
