Stephen Chow

Stephen Chow, born on June 22, 1962, is a renowned Hong Kong filmmaker and former actor celebrated for his unique brand of mo lei tau comedy, which has left an indelible mark on Chinese popular culture. His journey in the entertainment industry began in television, where he gained fame through various variety shows and TV dramas. Chow's rise to prominence was marked by his breakthrough performances in the comedy dramas The Final Combat and The Justice of Life in 1989, the latter of which initiated his fruitful collaboration with actor Ng Man-tat.

In the early 1990s, Chow shattered Hong Kong's box office records with his films All for the Winner in 1990 and Fight Back to School in 1991, solidifying his reputation as one of the region's most beloved comedic actors. Transitioning into screenwriting and directing, he took on the role of de facto director for Flirting Scholar in 1993, before earning his first official directorial credit with From Beijing with Love in 1994. Although his initial Hong Kong-mainland co-productions, including Flirting Scholar and A Chinese Odyssey in 1995, received mixed reviews and struggled at the box office, they eventually gained a cult following, particularly A Chinese Odyssey, which elevated his status as a cultural icon in China by the 2000s.

Chow's international acclaim surged with the release of Shaolin Soccer in 2001, where he not only directed but also starred, followed by the success of Kung Fu Hustle in 2004. His final on-screen appearance came in CJ7 in 2008, after which he fully dedicated himself to filmmaking. Chow continued to achieve remarkable success with comedic hits such as Journey to the West in 2013 and The Mermaid in 2016, further cementing his legacy in the film industry.
