Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking, born on January eighth, nineteen forty-two, was a renowned English theoretical astrophysicist, cosmologist, and author. He served as the director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge and held the prestigious Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics from nineteen seventy-nine to two thousand nine. This position is widely regarded as one of the most esteemed academic roles globally.

Hawking's journey began in Oxford, where he was born into a family of physicians. At the age of seventeen, he commenced his studies at University College, Oxford, earning a first-class BA degree in physics. He then pursued graduate work at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he obtained his PhD in applied mathematics and theoretical physics in nineteen sixty-six, focusing on general relativity and cosmology.

In nineteen sixty-three, at the young age of twenty-one, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset, slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease, which gradually led to his paralysis over the decades. Despite losing his ability to speak, he adapted by using a speech-generating device, initially operated by a handheld switch and later through a single cheek muscle.

Hawking's scientific contributions were groundbreaking, including his collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems and the theoretical prediction of black holes emitting radiation, now known as Hawking radiation. His work in cosmology, particularly the integration of general relativity and quantum mechanics, established him as a leading figure in theoretical physics.

Beyond academia, Hawking achieved commercial success with popular science books, notably 'A Brief History of Time,' which remained on the Sunday Times bestseller list for an impressive two hundred thirty-seven weeks. He was honored as a Fellow of the Royal Society, a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In two thousand two, he was ranked twenty-fifth in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. Hawking passed away in two thousand eighteen at the age of seventy-six, having lived more than fifty years after his diagnosis.
