Stephen II of Croatia

Stephen II of Croatia, the last member of the Trpimirović dynasty, holds a unique place in the history of the medieval Croatian Kingdom. Born to Gojslav, the younger brother of Peter Krešimir IV, Stephen served as duke of Croatia around the year one thousand sixty-six. His anticipated ascension to the throne was thwarted in one thousand seventy-five when the clergy and nobility chose Demetrius Zvonimir, a former ban in Slavonia, to be king instead.

Following this political sidelining, Stephen II found refuge in the monastery of St Stephen Beneath the Pines, located on the Sustipan peninsula near Split. He cited an alleged illness as the reason for his monastic life, expressing in a charter from one thousand seventy-eight his desire for spiritual redemption. In this document, he referred to himself as a once-glittering prince, now seeking solace and prayers from the monastery's leader.

Despite his frail health, Stephen II was persuaded by the aristocracy and clergy to assume the throne after the death of Zvonimir in one thousand eighty-nine. His reign, however, was marked by ineffectiveness and lasted less than two years, as he spent much of his time in the tranquility of the monastery. During this period, Queen Jelena, Zvonimir's widow, was reportedly scheming to secure the Croatian Crown for her brother, King Ladislaus I of Hungary.

Stephen II passed away peacefully in December of one thousand ninety, or possibly at the beginning of one thousand ninety-one, without leaving an heir. His death precipitated a period of turmoil in Croatia, leading to the election of Petar Snačić as King in one thousand ninety-three and subsequent conflicts with Hungary, culminating in the Battle of Gvozd Mountain in one thousand ninety-seven.
