He began his junior career with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League, where he was selected third overall in the nineteen ninety-five draft. Peat's talent was recognized early, leading to his selection by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as the thirty-second overall pick in the nineteen ninety-eight NHL Entry Draft.

Peat's professional career commenced in two thousand with the Portland Pirates, where he quickly established himself as an enforcer. He played four seasons with the Washington Capitals from two thousand one to two thousand five, contributing to the team's physical presence on the ice. After his time with the Capitals, he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in two thousand five, ultimately spending the remainder of his career in the American Hockey League before retiring in two thousand seven.

Following his retirement, Peat faced significant personal challenges, including substance use disorder, post-concussion syndrome, and homelessness. His struggles culminated in a conviction for arson in two thousand fifteen. Tragically, Stephen Peat's life came to an untimely end in two thousand twenty-four when he was struck by a vehicle.
