His political career reached its zenith when he served as the Palatine from fourteen ninety-two until his death in fourteen ninety-nine. In his personal life, Stephen Zápolya was married twice, with his second marriage to the Polish princess Hedwig of Cieszyn on the eleventh of August, fourteen eighty-three. This union produced four children, each of whom would leave their mark on history. His eldest son, János Zápolya, born on the second of June, fourteen eighty-seven, would later ascend to the throne as King of Hungary.

Stephen's other children included George Zápolya, who met a tragic end in battle at Mohács on the twenty-ninth of August, fifteen twenty-six, and Barbara Zápolya, who became queen consort of Poland through her marriage to Sigismund I the Old. The youngest, Magdalena Zápolya, was born around the year fourteen ninety-nine but sadly did not survive infancy.

Upon his passing on the twenty-third of December, fourteen ninety-nine, Stephen Zápolya was laid to rest in the Zápolya family vault located in the Szepes chapter house, a testament to his noble lineage and enduring legacy.
