Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry, born on May 30, 1902, is better known by his stage name Stepin Fetchit. He was an American vaudevillian, comedian, and film actor of Jamaican and Bahamian descent. Fetchit is celebrated as the first black actor to achieve a successful film career, particularly during the 1930s when his unique persona was famously dubbed the 'Laziest Man in the World.'
Perry's portrayal of Stepin Fetchit allowed him to carve out a significant niche in the entertainment industry, making history as the first black actor to earn one million dollars. He also holds the distinction of being the first black actor to receive featured screen credit in a film, marking a pivotal moment in Hollywood's history.
However, after 1939, Perry's film career began to wane, and by 1953, it had nearly come to a halt. During this period, many Black Americans began to view the Stepin Fetchit character as an outdated and damaging stereotype. Despite this, writer Mel Watkins has suggested that the character should be seen more as a prankster than merely lazy, highlighting the complexity of Perry's legacy.
