Throughout his time in the sport, he represented several prominent teams, including Landbouwkrediet–Colnago, Discovery Channel, Barloworld, Team Sky, BMC Racing Team, and Team Dimension Data. Cummings also proudly donned the Great Britain jersey at prestigious events such as the Summer Olympic Games and the UCI World Championships.

During his illustrious road racing career, Cummings achieved a remarkable seventeen victories, highlighted by Grand Tour stage wins at the two thousand twelve Vuelta a España and the two thousand fifteen and two thousand sixteen editions of the Tour de France. His prowess was further demonstrated when he clinched both the British National Road Race Championships and the British National Time Trial Championships in two thousand seventeen. Additionally, he showcased his talent in various UCI World Tour races, securing stages in the Tour of Beijing, Tirreno–Adriatico, Tour of the Basque Country, and Critérium du Dauphiné.
