Steve Daines, born on August 20, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, is a prominent American politician and businessman. He has been serving as the senior United States senator from Montana since 2015, marking a significant milestone as the first Republican Class II senator from the state in over a century.
Before his political career, Daines gained valuable experience in the corporate world, holding positions at Procter & Gamble and RightNow Technologies, a software service based in Montana. His political journey began with an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2008, but he persevered and was elected to represent Montana's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012.
In 2014, Daines made history by becoming the first Republican to secure a U.S. Senate seat in Montana in the twenty-first century. He was re-elected in 2020, defeating the Democratic nominee, incumbent governor Steve Bullock. His leadership skills were further recognized in 2023 when he was appointed chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, a role in which he played a crucial part in the Republicans gaining four Senate seats in the 2024 election cycle.
As of 2025, Daines became Montana's senior senator and dean of the state's congressional delegation following the non-re-election of Jon Tester. However, on March 4, 2026, just minutes before the filing deadline for the Senate race in Montana, Daines made the surprising announcement that he would not seek re-election in 2026.
