Steve Jobs, born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, was an iconic American entrepreneur and inventor who played a pivotal role in the personal computer revolution of the late 20th century. He co-founded Apple Inc. in 1976 alongside Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, initially focusing on the development and sale of the Apple I personal computer. The duo quickly gained fame with the Apple II, one of the first mass-produced microcomputers, which set the stage for the future of personal computing.
In 1979, Jobs recognized the commercial potential of the Xerox Alto, which featured a mouse-driven graphical user interface. This insight led to the development of the Apple Lisa in 1983, followed by the groundbreaking Macintosh in 1984, the first mass-produced computer with a GUI. The Macintosh not only revolutionized computing but also launched the desktop publishing industry, aided by the introduction of the Apple LaserWriter, the first laser printer to support vector graphics and PostScript.
After a power struggle with Apple's board, Jobs left the company in 1985 and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company. In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, which became Pixar Animation Studios. Under his leadership, Pixar produced the first-ever computer-animated feature film, Toy Story, and established itself as a leader in animation.
Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 as CEO following the acquisition of NeXT, where he was instrumental in revitalizing the company, which was on the brink of bankruptcy. He collaborated with designer Jony Ive to create a series of innovative products, including the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, which transformed the technology landscape. Jobs also served on the board of Gap Inc. from 1999 to 2002.
Diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor in 2003, Jobs continued to lead Apple until his resignation in 2011, shortly before his death from tumor-related complications. His legacy endures, with over 450 patents to his name and a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded in 2022.
