Steve Scalise, born on October 6, 1965, is a prominent American politician currently serving as the House majority leader since 2023. He has represented Louisiana's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2008. A dedicated member of the Republican Party, Scalise previously held the positions of House majority whip from 2014 to 2019 and House minority whip from 2019 to 2023.
Before his tenure in Congress, Scalise made his mark in state politics, serving four months in the Louisiana State Senate and completing three terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He was also the chair of the House Republican Study Committee from 2013 to 2014. His election as majority whip on June 19, 2014, marked a significant milestone, making him the first Louisianian to hold this position since Hale Boggs.
Scalise's congressional district encompasses a large portion of New Orleans's suburbs, including Metairie, Kenner, and Slidell, as well as parts of New Orleans itself. In 2017, he became the dean of the Louisiana congressional delegation following the retirement of Senator David Vitter. His political journey has not been without challenges; on June 14, 2017, Scalise was shot and seriously injured during a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game, an act of violence targeting Republicans. After months of recovery, he returned to Congress on September 28.
In October 2023, Scalise sought the Republican nomination for Speaker of the House following the removal of Kevin McCarthy. However, he withdrew from the race a day later after failing to secure the necessary votes.
