Steven Seagal, born on April 10, 1952, is a multifaceted American film actor, producer, screenwriter, martial artist, and musician. He holds a 7th-dan black belt and the title of shihan in Aikikai aikido. Seagal began his journey in martial arts as an instructor in Japan, where he made history as the first non-Japanese and American to operate an aikido dojo. His move to Los Angeles marked the continuation of his teaching career, which laid the groundwork for his future in film.
In 1988, Seagal made his acting debut in the film Above the Law, notable for being the first American movie to incorporate aikido into its fight sequences. By 1991, he had already starred in three successful films, but it was his role as Navy SEAL counter-terrorist expert Casey Ryback in Under Siege (1992) that catapulted him to greater fame. He reprised this iconic role in the sequel, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), and made his directorial debut with On Deadly Ground in 1994.
Throughout the late 1990s, Seagal continued to star in feature films and direct-to-video productions, including The Patriot. His career later transitioned to reality television, where he gained attention as the main antagonist in Robert Rodriguez's Machete (2010) and as a reserve deputy sheriff in Steven Seagal: Lawman.
In addition to his film career, Seagal is an accomplished guitarist, having released two studio albums, Songs from the Crystal Cave and Mojo Priest. He has collaborated with notable artists like Stevie Wonder and Tony Rebel. Beyond entertainment, Seagal is an environmentalist and animal rights activist, supporting the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. His contributions to martial arts were recognized in 2004 when he was inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame.
However, Seagal's career has not been without controversy. Since 1991, he has faced multiple allegations of sexual harassment and assault. A supporter of Vladimir Putin, he endorsed the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, leading to his acquisition of Russian and Serbian citizenship in 2016. In 2018, he was appointed as Russia's special envoy to the U.S.
