In 2009, following Middlesbrough's relegation, Downing transferred to Aston Villa for an initial fee of ten million pounds. His journey continued as he moved to Liverpool two years later for a sum of twenty million pounds, where he again celebrated League Cup success in 2012. After two seasons with West Ham United, he returned to Middlesbrough, contributing to the team's promotion to the Premier League.

Downing's international career spanned from 2005 to 2014, during which he earned thirty-five caps for England.
