Stirling Moss, born on September seventeenth, nineteen twenty-nine, was a legendary British racing driver and broadcaster, whose career in Formula One spanned from nineteen fifty-one to nineteen sixty-one. Renowned as one of the greatest drivers to never clinch the Formula One World Drivers' Championship, Moss achieved an impressive record of two hundred twelve official race victories across various motorsport disciplines, including sixteen Formula One Grands Prix.
Raised in London, Moss was the son of amateur racing driver Alfred Moss and the older brother of rally driver Pat. His passion for racing ignited at a young age when his father gifted him an Austin 7, which he raced around their family’s country house. Initially pursuing equestrian sports, Moss utilized his winnings to acquire a Cooper 500 in nineteen forty-eight, quickly finding success in motor racing with several wins in Formula Three before his first major triumph at the RAC Tourist Trophy in nineteen fifty.
Moss made his Formula One debut at the nineteen fifty-one Swiss Grand Prix with HWM, later moving to Maserati in nineteen fifty-four, where he secured his first podium at the Belgian Grand Prix. Joining Mercedes in nineteen fifty-five, he celebrated his first win at the British Grand Prix, finishing as runner-up in the championship to the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio. This rivalry continued as Moss again finished second to Fangio in nineteen fifty-six and nineteen fifty-seven, while also achieving multiple Grand Prix victories.
Throughout his career, Moss amassed sixteen wins, sixteen pole positions, nineteen fastest laps, and twenty-four podium finishes in Formula One, a record for a non-World Drivers' Champion. He was a three-time Monaco Grand Prix winner and a five-time International Gold Cup champion. After a serious accident in nineteen sixty-two left him in a coma for a month, Moss retired from racing but transitioned into a successful career as a commentator and pundit for ABC. His contributions to motorsport were recognized with his induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in nineteen ninety.
