She served as the executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation from December two thousand seven until May two thousand fourteen, where she played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s direction and outreach.

Prior to her tenure at Wikimedia, Gardner was the director of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's website and online news outlets, showcasing her expertise in digital journalism and online media management.
