Suicide of Amanda Todd

Amanda Todd was a fifteen-year-old Canadian student whose tragic story became a poignant symbol of the devastating effects of cyberbullying. Just a month prior, she bravely shared her experiences in a YouTube video, utilizing a series of flashcards to narrate her harrowing ordeal of being blackmailed into exposing herself via webcam and the subsequent bullying and physical assaults she endured.

Her video, uploaded on September seventh, two thousand twelve, resonated with many and went viral after her death, amassing over fifteen million views by July fourth, two thousand twenty-five. The impact of her story was further amplified by mirrored copies of the video and a reaction video by React, which garnered nearly forty-five million views. The widespread attention led to investigations by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the British Columbia Coroners Service into the circumstances surrounding her suicide.

In the wake of Amanda's death, the Premier of British Columbia expressed condolences and called for a national dialogue on the need to criminalize cyberbullying. This tragic event prompted a motion in the Canadian House of Commons to study the extent of bullying in Canada and to increase funding for anti-bullying initiatives. Amanda's mother, Carol, took significant steps to honor her daughter's memory by establishing the Amanda Todd Trust, which aims to support anti-bullying education and mental health programs for youth.

The case took a legal turn when Aydin Coban, a Dutch-Turkish man already imprisoned for sexual blackmail in the Netherlands, was extradited to Canada to face charges related to the harassment and extortion of Amanda. On August fifth, two thousand twenty-two, a jury found him guilty on all counts, leading to a thirteen-year prison sentence handed down on October fourteenth, two thousand twenty-two. However, on December twenty-first, two thousand twenty-three, a Dutch judge reduced his sentence to six years.
