Sultan Rakhmanov, born on July sixth, nineteen fifty in Uzbekistan, was a distinguished weightlifter who represented the USSR. He achieved remarkable success in his sport, most notably winning the gold medal in the super heavyweight class at the nineteen eighty Summer Olympics held in Moscow. This victory was particularly significant as it came after his legendary teammate, Vasily Alekseyev, was eliminated following three unsuccessful attempts to lift one hundred eighty kilograms.
Rakhmanov's performance at the Olympics was nothing short of spectacular; he executed six flawless lifts, securing a decisive victory that would define his career. In addition to his Olympic triumph, he also claimed gold medals at the World Weightlifting Championships in both nineteen seventy-nine and nineteen eighty, solidifying his status as one of the top weightlifters of his time.
With a father of Uzbek descent and a Ukrainian mother, Rakhmanov trained extensively in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, during his weightlifting career. He was a proud member of the Soviet national weightlifting team for nine years, and his most memorable achievement remains the gold medal at the nineteen eighty Olympics. For this accomplishment, he was honored with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour at the Kremlin.
After retiring from competitive weightlifting, Rakhmanov continued to contribute to the sports community as the Chairman of the International Association of Disabled Sports Veterans and served as the esteemed President of the Aikido Federation of Ukraine. He was also recognized as one of the pioneers of organized arm wrestling in the Soviet Union. Sadly, Sultan Rakhmanov passed away on May fifth, two thousand three, from a heart attack at the age of fifty-two.
