Summer Mortimer, born on April twenty-second, nineteen ninety-three, is a remarkable Canadian-Dutch former paraswimmer who has made significant contributions to the world of competitive swimming. Initially competing for Canada, she later represented the Netherlands national paralympic team, showcasing her versatility and talent across international platforms.
Her illustrious career includes an impressive tally of seven world-championship finals victories, alongside a stunning performance at her first Paralympic Games in London, where she earned four medals for Canada: two gold, one silver, and one bronze. Mortimer's journey into paraswimming began after a trampolining accident led her to retrain, and she made her international debut in twenty ten with an SM10 classification, quickly setting world records.
Throughout her career, Mortimer has excelled in various events, winning medals in all four individual races at the Paralympics and holding world records in the S10 50- and 100-metre long-course freestyle, as well as the 50-, 100-, and 200-metre backstroke. In twenty thirteen, she transitioned to the Netherlands national team, achieving remarkable success at the twenty fourteen IPC championships with two gold and one silver medal, while also setting two European records.
Despite her achievements, Mortimer faced challenges, including her decision not to compete in the twenty sixteen Summer Olympics due to serious health reasons. However, she continued to contribute to the sport as a sports analyst for swimming at the twenty twenty Summer Olympics and the twenty twenty Summer Paralympics, as well as co-hosting the twenty twenty-two Winter Paralympics and the upcoming twenty twenty-four Summer Paralympics on CBC.
