Suniti Solomon

Suniti Solomon, born in nineteen thirty-eight, is a distinguished Indian physician and microbiologist renowned for her groundbreaking work in AIDS research and prevention. In nineteen eighty-six, she made history by diagnosing the first cases of AIDS in India among sex workers in Chennai, alongside her dedicated student, Sellappan Nirmala. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of her lifelong commitment to combating the HIV epidemic in the country.

In recognition of her significant contributions, Dr. Solomon established the YR Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education in Chennai, a vital institution dedicated to advancing research and education on HIV/AIDS. Her efforts have not only transformed the landscape of AIDS awareness in India but have also provided critical support and resources for affected individuals.

Dr. Solomon's remarkable achievements have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious National Women Bio-scientist Award from the Indian government.
