Sunthorn Phu

Sunthorn Phu, born on June twenty-sixth, seventeen eighty-six, is celebrated as one of Thailand's most revered poets. Often referred to as the 'Shakespeare of Thailand,' Phu's literary contributions have left an indelible mark on Thai culture. His journey began shortly after the establishment of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, where he entered royal service as a court scribe during the reign of King Rama II.

Following the death of King Rama II, Phu chose to ordain as a monk, dedicating nearly two decades to spiritual pursuits. However, his passion for poetry and service to the crown drew him back to the royal court near the end of King Rama III's reign. During this period, he served as a scribe to Prince Chuthamani, who would later be known as Krom Khun Isaret Rangsan.

Phu's literary career flourished during the reign of King Rama II, where he gained recognition for his poetic prowess. After a significant hiatus, he returned to the court as a royal scribe under King Rama III, where he continued to create works that resonate with audiences to this day. His notable compositions include 'Nirat Phukhao Thong,' which chronicles his journey to the Golden Mountain, and 'Nirat Suphan,' detailing his travels to Suphan Buri province, alongside the epic 'Phra Aphai Mani' saga.

In recognition of his contributions, he was eventually promoted to the esteemed rank of Phra Sunthorn Vohara, serving as the Chief of the Department of Royal Scribes of the Front Palace. This position marked the pinnacle of his official career, which continued until his passing in eighteen fifty-five.
