Surya Sen

Surya Sen, also known as Surya Kumar Sen, was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, born on 22 March 1894. His legacy is most notably marked by his leadership in the Chittagong Armoury Raid of 1930, a pivotal event in the struggle against British colonial rule.

Before becoming a revolutionary, Sen worked as a schoolteacher and earned the affectionate title of Master Da, which translates to 'elder brother' in Bengali. His political awakening began in 1916 during his studies at Berhampore College, where he was deeply influenced by nationalist ideals. By 1918, he had risen to the position of president of the Indian National Congress's Chittagong branch, where he began to recruit a passionate group of young revolutionaries known as the Chittagong group, including notable figures like Ananta Singh, Ganesh Ghosh, and Lokenath Bal.

Sen was actively involved in the Non-co-operation movement and faced imprisonment for his revolutionary activities from 1926 to 1928. He was known for his exceptional organizational skills and often expressed that 'Humanism is a special virtue of a revolutionary,' reflecting his deep commitment to the cause.

The Chittagong raid in 1930 resulted in a fierce confrontation, leading to the deaths of over eighty British Indian Army soldiers and twelve revolutionaries. Following the raid, Sen and his comrades dispersed into small groups, continuing their resistance by launching raids on government personnel and property. His eventual arrest on 16 February 1933 marked a tragic turn in his life, as he was hiding in the home of a family member. After a trial, he was executed by hanging on 12 January 1934, leaving behind a legacy of courage and sacrifice that continues to inspire.
