Suryavarman I, a prominent sovereign of the Khmer Empire, reigned from the year one thousand two to one thousand fifty. His ascent to power began with a decisive usurpation of King Udayadityavarman I, where he triumphed over the king's armies around the year one thousand two.
Following his initial victory, Suryavarman I faced a prolonged conflict with Udayadityavarman's successor, Jayavirahvarman. This struggle culminated in Suryavarman's firm claim to the throne in the year one thousand ten, solidifying his position as a key figure in the empire's history.
As a Mahayana Buddhist, Suryavarman I was known for his religious tolerance, particularly towards the emerging Theravada Buddhist presence within the Khmer kingdom. His reign was marked by a blend of spiritual beliefs that contributed to the cultural richness of the empire.
