Susan Collins

Susan Collins, born on December seventh, nineteen fifty-two, in Caribou, Maine, is a prominent American politician who has served as the senior United States senator from Maine since nineteen ninety-seven. A member of the Republican Party, she holds the distinction of being Maine's longest-serving member of Congress and the longest-serving Republican woman senator. In twenty twenty-five, she took on the role of chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, further solidifying her influence in the Senate.

Collins began her career in politics as a staff assistant for Senator William Cohen in nineteen seventy-five. By nineteen eighty-one, she had advanced to become the staff director of the Oversight of Government Management Subcommittee of the Committee on Governmental Affairs. Her career continued to flourish as she was appointed commissioner of the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation by Governor John R. McKernan Jr. in nineteen eighty-seven. In nineteen ninety-two, President George H. W. Bush appointed her as the director of the Small Business Administration's regional office in Boston.

After returning to Maine in nineteen ninety-four, Collins made history as the first female major-party nominee for governor of Maine in the general election, finishing third with twenty-three percent of the vote. Following this, she became the founding director of the Center for Family Business at Husson University in Bangor. Collins was first elected to the Senate in nineteen ninety-six and has been reelected every six years since, demonstrating her enduring appeal to voters.

Throughout her Senate career, Collins has been recognized as a moderate Republican, often serving as a pivotal vote on key issues. She was one of three Republicans to oppose a partial repeal of the Affordable Care Act and the sole Republican to vote against confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. As a pro-choice Republican, her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh drew scrutiny, particularly after the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. In twenty twenty-one, she became the longest-serving Republican woman senator in history, surpassing Margaret Chase Smith.

Collins has maintained her support for the sixty-vote Senate threshold, advocating for bipartisan compromise and the preservation of the filibuster. She played a crucial role in the Trump administration's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, although she later expressed concerns about certain provisions. Notably, during the impeachment trials of both Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, Collins demonstrated her independence by voting to acquit on both charges in the first trial and joining a minority of Republicans to convict Trump in the second trial.
