Susana Martinez, born on July fourteenth, nineteen fifty-nine, in El Paso, Texas, is a distinguished American politician and attorney. She made history as the first female Governor of New Mexico and the first Hispanic female governor in the United States. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Law, Martinez began her legal career in nineteen eighty-six as an Assistant District Attorney in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
In nineteen ninety-six, she transitioned into politics by joining the Republican Party and successfully ran for District Attorney, serving three terms from nineteen ninety-seven to two thousand eleven. Following the term limit of incumbent Governor Bill Richardson, Martinez announced her candidacy for governor in two thousand ten. She triumphed in a competitive five-candidate Republican primary and subsequently defeated the incumbent Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish in the general election with fifty-three percent of the vote.
Martinez was re-elected in two thousand fourteen, securing fifty-seven percent of the vote against New Mexico Attorney General Gary King. During her tenure, she served as chair of the Republican Governors Association from two thousand fifteen to two thousand sixteen.
