Susanna of Rome

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Susanna of Rome

Susanna of Rome, a revered Christian martyr, is remembered for her steadfast faith during the Diocletianic Persecution. Although her hagiography, composed between four hundred and fifty and five hundred AD, lacks historical authenticity, it is believed that a genuine martyr named Susanna inspired this literary creation.

Her feast day is celebrated on the eleventh of August in the Roman Martyrology. However, since nineteen sixty-nine, her veneration has been primarily associated with the Church of Santa Susanna in Rome. This church, originally dedicated to Gaius, was renamed in honor of Susanna around five hundred and ninety-five, likely due to the growing popularity of her story.

In addition to her main shrine in Rome, Susanna is honored in Santiago de Compostela, where a church dedicated to her was established in the early twelfth century. This church was built following the translation of her relics from Braga to Compostela by Diego Gelmírez, as chronicled in the Historia Compostelana. Notably, Susanna shares the title of co-patron of the city with St. James, further solidifying her significance in Christian history.
