Swami Rama

Swami Rama, born in 1925, was an influential Indian yoga guru who made significant contributions to the practice and philosophy of yoga. In 1969, he relocated to the United States, where he began his journey of teaching yoga at the YMCA. His passion for sharing the wisdom of yoga led him to establish the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy in Illinois in 1971, which later moved its headquarters to Honesdale, Pennsylvania in 1977.

Renowned for his remarkable ability to control his body through yoga nidra, Swami Rama gained fame not only as a teacher but also as a prolific writer. His autobiographical work, 'Living with Himalayan Masters,' showcases his experiences and insights, further solidifying his legacy in the world of yoga.

Despite his achievements, Swami Rama's life was marred by controversy. From the 1970s onward, he faced persistent allegations of sexual abuse involving his followers. In 1997, a significant legal case culminated in a woman winning a lawsuit against him for multiple sexual assaults, casting a shadow over his teachings and reputation.
