Sylvester Turner, born on September twenty-seventh, nineteen fifty-four, was a prominent American politician and attorney who dedicated his life to public service. Raised in Houston, he pursued higher education at the University of Houston, earning a bachelor's degree in political science, before obtaining his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. His political career began in nineteen eighty-eight when he was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives, where he served until two thousand sixteen.
Turner's journey in local politics saw him run for mayor of Houston twice, in nineteen ninety-one and again in two thousand three, before finally winning the mayoral election in two thousand fifteen. His victory over Bill King was historic, as it marked the closest mayoral election in Houston's history, with a margin of less than two percent. He was re-elected for a second term in December two thousand nineteen, defeating Tony Buzbee.
In two thousand twenty-four, following the passing of Sheila Jackson Lee, Turner announced his candidacy for the congressional seat representing Texas's eighteenth district. He was nominated at the subsequent convention and successfully elected in November two thousand twenty-four, taking office in January two thousand twenty-five. During his brief tenure in Congress, he served on the Homeland Security Committee and the Science, Space, & Technology Committee.
Tragically, Sylvester Turner's life was cut short when he passed away in the early morning of March fifth, two thousand twenty-five, shortly after attending a speech by Donald Trump to a joint session of Congress the night before. His legacy as a dedicated public servant and advocate for his community continues to resonate.
