Sylvia Daoust

Sylvia Daoust, born on May twenty-fourth, nineteen hundred and two, was a pioneering Canadian sculptor, teacher, and painter, recognized as one of the first female sculptors in Quebec. Her artistic journey began with studies at the Council of Arts & Manufactures and the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, where she honed her skills under the guidance of notable instructors such as Charles Maillard and Maurice Feliz. She further developed her craft with Edwin Holgate at the Art Association of Montreal.

Throughout her illustrious career, Daoust garnered numerous accolades for her exceptional work, which has been showcased in esteemed institutions across the United States, Italy, and Canada. She is particularly celebrated for her portrait sculptures and her significant contributions to revitalizing the traditions of liturgical art, which played a crucial role in the cultural landscape of her time.

In addition to her artistic achievements, Daoust was a founding member of Le Retable d'Art Sacre, an organization dedicated to transforming Roman Catholic churches in French Canada. Her efforts in this group helped to elevate the standards of religious art and architecture, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Sylvia Daoust passed away in Montreal in two thousand four, at the remarkable age of one hundred and two, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire future generations of artists.
