Sylvia Rivera

Sylvia Rivera, born on July second, nineteen fifty-one, was a prominent American activist known for her unwavering commitment to LGBTQ and women's rights. A key figure in the gay liberation movement, she dedicated her life to advocating for marginalized communities, particularly in New York City.

Identifying as a drag queen for much of her life and later embracing her identity as a transgender person, Rivera was deeply involved in activism. She participated in numerous demonstrations alongside the Gay Liberation Front, fighting for equality and justice for all.

In collaboration with her close friend Marsha P. Johnson, Rivera co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). This vital organization focused on providing support and resources for homeless young drag queens, gay youth, and trans women, highlighting her dedication to uplifting those in need.
