Thomas Jack "T.J." Burke KC, born in Los Angeles, California in nineteen seventy-two, is a distinguished lawyer and politician from New Brunswick. As a proud Wolastoqiyik member of the Tobique First Nation, he made history by becoming the first Indigenous person elected to a legislature in the Maritimes. His political career in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick spanned from two thousand three to two thousand ten, during which he served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General from two thousand six to two thousand nine.
Burke's family returned to Canada in nineteen seventy-eight, and he was raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He graduated from Fredericton High School in nineteen ninety before enlisting in the United States Military, where he served as a paratrooper with the elite 82nd Airborne Division from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-five. After his military service, he returned to Canada to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick and a law degree from Dalhousie University.
In December two thousand five, Burke garnered national attention when the New Brunswick legislature unanimously passed a motion he championed, declaring two thousand six as the "Year of the War Bride." However, his political journey faced a setback in September two thousand ten when he was defeated by Progressive Conservative candidate Troy Lifford.
Since leaving politics, Burke has established himself as a prominent criminal defense lawyer in New Brunswick, known for his tireless advocacy for the wrongfully accused. He has successfully argued cases before all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada, and has received numerous accolades, including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Awards. Additionally, he has served as Canada's Chief Federal Negotiator on significant legal matters and has taught law courses at both St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick's law school.
