Taffy Abel

Taffy Abel, born on May 28, 1900, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, was a pioneering American ice hockey player. As a member of the Native American Ojibwe community, he faced the challenge of concealing his heritage until 1939. Abel's career in the National Hockey League spanned from 1926 to 1934, during which he played for the New York Rangers and the Chicago Black Hawks.

Abel's remarkable achievements include being a silver medalist in ice hockey at the 1924 Winter Olympics, where he also had the honor of serving as the U.S. flagbearer. This made him the first Native American to compete in the Winter Olympics and to earn a medal, marking a significant milestone in sports history.

In addition to his Olympic success, Taffy Abel was a key player on two Stanley Cup championship teams. On November 16, 1926, he made history by becoming the first United States-born Native American player to secure a regular position in the NHL with the New York Rangers. His contributions to the sport have earned him a place in the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
