Takuma Sato, born on January 28, 1977, in Tokyo, Japan, is a distinguished racing automobile driver known for his remarkable achievements in both Formula One and the IndyCar Series. Sato's journey in motorsport began in karting, and with the support of Honda, he made the pivotal move to Europe in 1999. His talent quickly shone through as he progressed to Formula Three, where he finished third in the British Championship in 2000 and dominated the series in 2001, securing victories at the Macau Grand Prix and the Masters of Formula 3.
In 2002, Sato made his Formula One debut with Jordan at the Australian Grand Prix, driving under Honda power. He transitioned to BAR in 2003, initially serving as a reserve driver before becoming a full-time competitor in 2004. During his time with BAR, Sato achieved his only podium finish at the United States Grand Prix and concluded the season with a career-best eighth place in the World Drivers' Championship. However, after facing challenges in 2005, he joined Super Aguri for the 2006 season, where he continued until the team's withdrawal from Formula One in 2008.
After a brief hiatus from racing, Sato returned to open-wheel competition in the IndyCar Series in 2010 with KV Racing Technology. He made history in 2013 by becoming the first Asian driver to win an IndyCar race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. His career continued to flourish as he signed with Andretti in 2017, clinching his first Indianapolis 500 victory that year. Sato repeated this feat in 2020, solidifying his status as a two-time winner of the prestigious event and the only Asian driver to achieve such a milestone.
Throughout his career, Sato has been celebrated for his aggressive driving style and his motto, 'No Attack, No Chance.' He has garnered a loyal fan base and remains a prominent figure in the racing community.
