Tamara Press

Tamara Press, born on May 10, 1937, emerged as a formidable force in athletics during the early 1960s, particularly in the shot put and discus throw. As a Soviet athlete, she showcased her exceptional talent on the world stage, securing three gold medals and one silver at the Olympic Games held in 1960 and 1964. Her prowess was further highlighted by her triumph in three European Championships between 1958 and 1962.

Throughout her illustrious career, Press set an impressive total of eleven world records from 1959 to 1965, with five in the shot put and six in the discus. Her dominance in the sport was reflected in her remarkable collection of sixteen national titles, nine of which were in the shot put and seven in the discus, spanning from 1958 to 1966.

In addition to her own achievements, Tamara was part of a remarkable athletic family, with her younger sister Irina Press also making a name for herself as a prominent track athlete, excelling primarily in sprint events. Together, they contributed to the legacy of Soviet athletics during a golden era.
