She began her journey in the world of synchronized swimming at the tender age of five, while also engaging in competitive swimming. Her early training with the Loreleis, a team founded by Coach Mary Rose in Maitland, Florida, set the stage for her remarkable career.

By the age of seven, Tammy showcased her talent by winning both solo and duet competitions at the Sunshine State Games in Orlando in July 1983. Her prowess continued to shine as she competed with the Orlando Area Dolphins, where she achieved impressive victories in various swimming events, including the fifty freestyle and twenty-five breaststroke.

Cleland's dedication and skill culminated in her becoming an Olympic champion in 1996, representing the United States in synchronized swimming. She also participated in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, further solidifying her legacy in the sport. After her competitive career, Tammy transitioned into coaching, serving as a Synchro coach for her former team, the Aquanuts, from 2003 to 2007, and later for the U.S. Olympic team during the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
