Tan Sitong

Tan Sitong, born on March 10, 1865, was a prominent figure in the late Qing dynasty, recognized for his roles as a politician, philosopher, writer, journalist, and poet. With a courtesy name of Fusheng and a pseudonym of Zhuangfei, he emerged as a significant reformist during a tumultuous period in Chinese history.

At the age of thirty-three, Tan's life was tragically cut short when he was executed on September 28, 1898, following the failure of the Hundred Days' Reform. His involvement as one of the six gentlemen of this reform movement marked him as a key player in the push for modernization within the Qing dynasty.

Tan Sitong's execution became a poignant symbol of the political failures of the Qing dynasty's attempts at reform. It resonated deeply with the intellectual class of his time, ultimately influencing many to advocate for a more radical approach to change, including violent revolution aimed at overthrowing the Qing regime.
