Tancredo Neves

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Tancredo Neves

Tancredo Neves, born on March fourth, nineteen ten, was a prominent Brazilian politician, lawyer, and entrepreneur whose influence shaped the political landscape of Brazil in the twentieth century. He began his political journey with the Progressistas party, serving as a city councilman in São João del Rei from nineteen thirty-five to nineteen thirty-seven, where he garnered significant support and became President of the Municipal Legislature.

Throughout his career, Neves held various key positions, including Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs from nineteen fifty-three to nineteen fifty-four, and later as President of the Council of Ministers from nineteen sixty-one to nineteen sixty-two. His tenure as Governor of Minas Gerais from nineteen eighty-three to nineteen eighty-four was marked by political turmoil and the push for direct presidential elections, known as the Diretas Já movement.

In January nineteen eighty-five, Neves was elected President of Brazil through an electoral college, but tragically fell ill just before his inauguration. He passed away on April twenty-first, nineteen eighty-five, due to diverticulitis, never having the opportunity to assume the presidency. Despite this, his legacy endures, as he was posthumously recognized in the gallery of Brazilian presidents.

Neves was a key figure in the Brazilian Democratic Movement and played a significant role in the transition to a multiparty system. His contributions to Brazilian politics were acknowledged when he was named one of the one hundred greatest Brazilians of all time in a competition held by Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão and the BBC in July two thousand twelve.
