Tanja Poutiainen

Tanja Poutiainen, born on April sixth, nineteen eighty, in Rovaniemi, Lapland, is a celebrated retired World Cup alpine ski racer from Finland. She made her mark in the technical events of slalom and giant slalom, achieving remarkable success throughout her career. Notably, she earned a silver medal in the women's giant slalom at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, showcasing her exceptional talent on the world stage.

Poutiainen's journey in skiing began at the tender age of three. By nineteen ninety-seven, she had already become the junior world champion in slalom at Schladming, Austria, and also secured a bronze medal in super-G. Her World Cup debut came in March of that year at Vail, United States, marking the start of a distinguished career. At the nineteen ninety-nine Junior World Championships, she placed third in giant slalom at Pra-Loup, France, further establishing her prowess in the sport.

On February twenty-eighth, two thousand four, Poutiainen achieved a historic milestone by scoring her first World Cup victory in slalom, becoming the first female Finnish alpine skier to do so. The following season, she dominated the World Cup circuit, winning titles in both slalom and giant slalom, and finishing fifth in the overall standings. Her impressive performance included three slalom victories, a giant slalom win, and ten podium finishes. At the two thousand five World Championships, she earned two silver medals, marking the first alpine World Championship medals for a Finnish female skier.

The two thousand nine season saw Poutiainen continue her success, claiming another World Cup discipline title in giant slalom and securing bronzes in both slalom and giant slalom at the World Championships in Val d'Isère. Renowned for her consistency, she completed every World Cup race she entered between January two thousand seven and March two thousand eleven, totaling sixty-seven races.

By the end of the two thousand fourteen season, Poutiainen had amassed eleven World Cup victories, forty-eight podium finishes, and three World Cup discipline titles. Trained by Michael Bont, she currently resides in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and announced her retirement from competitive skiing in March two thousand fourteen.
