Taranatha

Taranatha, born in Tibet in the year fifteen seventy-five, is revered as a prominent Lama of the Jonang school of Tibetan Buddhism. His exceptional intellect and dedication to scholarship have earned him recognition as one of the most remarkable scholars and exponents of this tradition.

Originally named Kun-dga'-snying-po, which translates to Anandagarbha in Sanskrit, he later adopted the name Taranatha. This choice reflected his deep appreciation for Sanskrit scholarship during a time when such mastery was becoming increasingly rare in Tibet. Additionally, it served as a tribute to his esteemed Indian teacher, Buddhaguptanātha.

From a young age, Taranatha's extraordinary qualities were acknowledged by those around him, a common occurrence among great masters. He had the privilege of studying under several esteemed figures, including Je Draktopa, Yeshe Wangpo, Kunga Tashi, and Jampa Lhundrup, with Buddhaguptanatha being his primary teacher.

His spiritual journey was further validated when Khenchen Lungrik Gyatso recognized him as the rebirth of Krishnacarya, as well as the reincarnation of Khenchen's own teacher, Jetsun Kunga Drolchok. Taranatha's legacy continues to inspire and influence the practice of Tibetan Buddhism.
