He was elevated to the rank of cardinal in two thousand three and has held several significant positions within the Church, including Archbishop of Vercelli from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-five and Archbishop of Genoa from two thousand two to two thousand six.

In his role as Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Bertone contributed to the Church's theological and doctrinal guidance. His tenure as Cardinal Secretary of State from two thousand six to two thousand thirteen marked a pivotal period in Vatican diplomacy, where he was instrumental in various international relations.
