Tatyana Prorochenko

Tatyana Prorochenko, born on March 15, 1952, in Berdyansk, Ukrainian SSR, was a distinguished Ukrainian athlete who made her mark in the world of athletics, primarily competing in the 400 metres for the Soviet Union. Her athletic journey began in gymnastics before she transitioned to track and field in 1964, training at VSS Kolos in Zaporizhia.

Prorochenko's Olympic debut came at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where she showcased her talent in the 4x100 metres relay, earning a bronze medal alongside her teammates Lyudmila Maslakova, Vera Anisimova, and Nadezhda Besfamilnaya. In the same Olympics, she also competed in the 200 metres, finishing sixth.

Her impressive career continued with a silver medal in the 4x400 relay at the 1978 European Athletics Championships, despite being eliminated in the semifinals of the 200 metres. Prorochenko further solidified her legacy by winning two bronze medals at the 1977 IAAF World Cup and a silver medal at the 1979 IAAF World Cup. She capped her Olympic experience by winning a gold medal in the 4x400 metres at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, alongside teammates Tatyana Goyshchik, Nina Zyuskova, and Irina Nazarova.

After retiring from competitive athletics, Prorochenko dedicated her efforts to the Ukrainian Athletic Federation and the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine. She was married to fellow Soviet Olympic athlete Viktor Burakov. In 2018, she was diagnosed with cancer, leading her family to organize a public appeal for financial support for her treatment in 2019. Sadly, Tatyana Prorochenko passed away from cancer on March 11, 2020.
