Tawakkol Karman

Tawakkol Karman, born on February seventh, nineteen seventy-nine, is a prominent Yemeni journalist, politician, and human rights activist. She is best known for co-founding and leading 'Women Journalists Without Chains', an organization established in two thousand five to champion press freedom and advocate for human rights in Yemen.

Her rise to international prominence came during the 2011 Yemeni uprising, a significant part of the Arab Spring movement. Karman became the face of this revolution, earning the nicknames 'Iron Woman' and 'Mother of the Revolution' for her unwavering commitment to social justice and reform.

In recognition of her efforts, Karman was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in two thousand eleven, becoming the first Yemeni, the first Arab woman, and the second Muslim woman to receive this prestigious honor. The award acknowledged her non-violent struggle for women's safety and their rights to participate fully in peace-building efforts.

Her activism gained momentum after two thousand five, particularly following the denial of a license for a mobile phone news service in two thousand seven, which prompted her to lead protests. By early two thousand eleven, she had aligned her protests with the broader Arab Spring, inspired by the Tunisian revolution that successfully ousted its government.

Karman's vocal opposition to President Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime and her calls for reform have made her a key figure in Yemen's ongoing quest for democracy and human rights.
