He began his competitive journey with the Canadian national team during the 2014–15 season, transitioning from his earlier participation representing the Netherlands in various international competitions.

Primarily excelling in long-distance events and team pursuit races, Bloemen has made a significant mark in the speed skating world. He is renowned for his remarkable achievement of setting a world record in the five thousand meters with a time of six minutes and one point eighty-six seconds in Salt Lake City.

His Olympic triumph came during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, where he not only clinched gold in the ten thousand meters with an Olympic record of twelve minutes and thirty-nine point seventy-seven seconds but also secured a silver medal in the five thousand meters. This victory made him the first Canadian man to medal in this distance since nineteen thirty-two.

In addition to his Olympic success, Bloemen has showcased his talent at the World Speed Skating Championships, earning a silver medal in the ten thousand meters and both a bronze and silver in the team pursuit events.
