Ted Lieu, born on March twenty-ninth, nineteen sixty-nine, is a prominent American lawyer and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has represented California's thirty-sixth congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since two thousand twenty-three. Prior to this role, he served the thirty-third congressional district from two thousand fifteen to two thousand twenty-three, covering key areas such as South Bay, Westside Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and the Beach Cities.
Emigrating from Taiwan at the tender age of three, Lieu is a proud Taiwanese American and one of the few naturalized U.S. citizens in Congress. His academic journey includes dual degrees from Stanford University and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. His political career began in the California State Assembly, where he represented the fifty-third district from two thousand five to two thousand ten, filling the seat of the late assemblyman Mike Gordon. He then moved to the California State Senate, representing the twenty-eighth district from two thousand eleven to two thousand fourteen, after the passing of Senator Jenny Oropeza.
Lieu's military service is notable; he was active duty in the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps from nineteen ninety-five to nineteen ninety-nine. He continued his service in the Air Force Reserve Command from two thousand to two thousand twenty-one, achieving the rank of colonel in two thousand fifteen. His leadership skills were recognized when House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi appointed him as assistant whip of the one hundred fifteenth Congress in two thousand seventeen. Since two thousand twenty-three, he has also held the position of vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
