Morton served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, representing the Foothills-Rocky View constituency from two thousand four to two thousand twelve. During his tenure, he was affiliated with the Progressive Conservative party and participated in both the twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh Alberta Legislative Assemblies. Despite his efforts, he was not successful in securing reelection during the two thousand twelve Alberta general election.

In addition to his legislative work, Morton was a candidate for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Association in two thousand six and two thousand eleven, showcasing his ambition and commitment to the party's future.

Beyond his political career, Morton is currently recognized as Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Calgary, where he has influenced many students and contributed to the academic community.
