Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Telets of Bulgaria

Telets of Bulgaria, a notable figure from the Ugain clan, ruled as a sovereign from the year seven hundred sixty-two until seven hundred sixty-five. His rise to power was marked by the controversial replacement of the legitimate rulers of Bulgaria, a move that drew the attention of Byzantine historians who characterized him as a brave and energetic leader in his prime, approximately thirty years of age.

Upon ascending the throne, Telets demonstrated his military prowess by commanding a well-trained and well-armed army against the Byzantine Empire. His aggressive campaigns devastated the Empire's frontier zones, challenging Emperor Constantine V Kopronymos to a contest of strength. The emperor responded by mobilizing his forces, including a fleet of eight hundred ships, to execute a strategic pincer movement against Telets.

Initially, Telets fortified the mountain passes with his troops and around twenty thousand Slavic auxiliaries. However, he later opted to confront the Byzantine forces on the plains of Anchialos, leading to the bloody battle that commenced on June thirtieth. Despite his initial preparations, the battle turned against him as his Slavic allies deserted him, ultimately leading to a decisive victory for the Byzantine emperor.

The aftermath of the battle sealed Telets' fate. Following his military defeat, he faced the wrath of his rebellious subjects, who lynched him along with his supporters. This tragic end marked a significant moment in Bulgarian history, illustrating the volatile nature of power and loyalty during that era.
