Terence

Publius Terentius Afer, known simply as Terence, was a prominent playwright of the Roman Republic, born around one hundred eighty-five BC in Carthage. His journey from slavery to literary acclaim is a testament to his remarkable talent and determination. Brought to Rome as a slave, Terence received an education that would eventually lead him to gain his freedom and pursue a career in writing.

Terence is celebrated for his six comedies, which were adaptations of Greek works by playwrights such as Menander and Apollodorus of Carystus. These plays, produced between one hundred sixty-six and one hundred sixty BC, have survived in their entirety and became foundational texts in Roman education. His works not only entertained but also shaped the curriculum of grammar pupils throughout the Western Roman Empire.

In his quest for inspiration, Terence embarked on a voyage to the East around the age of twenty-five. The circumstances of his death remain uncertain, with accounts suggesting he may have succumbed to disease in Greece or perished in a shipwreck on his return journey. Despite the ambiguity surrounding his life, Terence's influence on literature is undeniable, impacting renowned authors such as William Shakespeare and Molière.
