Terry Griffiths

Terry Griffiths, born on October sixteenth, nineteen forty-seven, was a distinguished Welsh professional snooker player, coach, and commentator. He began his journey in snooker by winning several amateur championships, including the Welsh Amateur Championship in nineteen seventy-five and consecutive English Amateur Championship titles in nineteen seventy-seven and nineteen seventy-eight. Griffiths turned professional in nineteen seventy-eight at the age of thirty, marking the start of an illustrious career.

In nineteen seventy-nine, Griffiths achieved a remarkable feat by winning the World Snooker Championship as a qualifier. He triumphed over notable players such as Alex Higgins in the quarter-finals, Eddie Charlton in the semi-finals, and Dennis Taylor in the final, with a score of twenty-four to sixteen. This victory made him only the second qualifier to win the World Championship, a feat that would later be matched by Shaun Murphy in two thousand five and Zhao Xintong in two thousand twenty-five.

Griffiths reached the World Championship final again in nineteen eighty-eight, where he faced Steve Davis, ultimately losing the match eleven to eighteen after being level at eight to eight. His consistency was evident as he reached at least the quarter-finals of the World Championship for nine consecutive years between nineteen eighty-four and nineteen ninety-two. Additionally, he secured the Masters title in nineteen eighty and the UK Championship in nineteen eighty-two, completing snooker's prestigious Triple Crown.

Later in his career, Griffiths shifted his focus towards coaching and mentoring, serving as the director of coaching for the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. He played a pivotal role in the development of several leading players, including Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams, and Ding Junhui. After retiring from professional competition in nineteen ninety-seven, Griffiths continued to influence the sport until his passing in December twenty twenty-four at the age of seventy-seven, following a prolonged illness related to dementia.
