Thabo Mbeki, born on June eighteenth, nineteen forty-two, is a prominent South African politician and economist who served as the president of South Africa from June fourteenth, nineteen ninety-nine, until September twenty-fourth, two thousand eight. His presidency came to an end at the request of his party, the African National Congress (ANC), following a political rivalry that emerged after he removed Jacob Zuma from his position as deputy president in two thousand five.
The son of Govan Mbeki, an influential ANC intellectual, Thabo Mbeki became involved in ANC politics in nineteen fifty-six when he joined the ANC Youth League. He was a member of the party's National Executive Committee from nineteen seventy-five and spent nearly three decades in exile, returning to South Africa after the ANC was unbanned in nineteen ninety. Mbeki's political career began to flourish as he rose through the ranks, becoming deputy president under Nelson Mandela from nineteen ninety-four to nineteen ninety-nine.
During his presidency, Mbeki was known for his commitment to conservative, market-friendly economic policies, which led to falling public debt and moderate economic growth. However, his approach drew criticism for being neoliberal and lacking in developmental focus, causing a rift with the left wing of the ANC and its allies. Mbeki's foreign policy was characterized by a strong emphasis on multilateralism and pan-Africanism, where he played a pivotal role in initiatives like the New Partnership for Africa's Development and the African Peer Review Mechanism.
Despite his achievements, Mbeki's tenure was marred by controversy, particularly regarding his government's handling of HIV/AIDS. Delays in implementing crucial health programs resulted in significant preventable deaths, and Mbeki's views on the disease were often labeled as denialist. His political decline began at the ANC's Polokwane conference in December two thousand seven, culminating in his resignation as president in September two thousand eight, following a High Court judgment that implicated him in political interference.
