Tharman Shanmugaratnam

Tharman Shanmugaratnam, born on January twenty-second, nineteen fifty-seven, is a distinguished Singaporean politician and economist. He has held the esteemed position of the ninth President of Singapore since 2023, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

Before ascending to the presidency, Tharman served in various high-profile roles, including Senior Minister from 2019 to 2023 and Deputy Prime Minister from 2011 to 2019. His tenure as Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore spanned from 2011 to 2023, showcasing his influence in shaping the nation’s economic landscape. Additionally, he held key ministerial positions, such as Minister for Finance and Minister for Education, contributing to Singapore's robust governance.

A member of the People's Action Party, Tharman made his political debut in the 2001 general election, representing the Jurong Group Representation Constituency. He was re-elected four times, demonstrating his enduring popularity and commitment to public service.

In June 2023, Tharman announced his candidacy for the presidential election, resigning from both the PAP and Parliament to uphold the non-partisan nature of the presidency. His election victory on September second, where he garnered seventy point four percent of the votes, marked him as the first presidential candidate of non-Chinese descent to win a contested election in Singapore.
