Theodor Nöldeke

Theodor Nöldeke, born on March second, eighteen thirty-six, was a distinguished German orientalist and scholar whose academic journey began under the tutelage of Heinrich Ewald. He is celebrated as one of the pioneers in the field of Quranic studies, particularly for his seminal work, Geschichte des Qorāns (History of the Quran), which laid the groundwork for future research in this area.

Nöldeke's scholarly pursuits extended beyond the Quran, encompassing Old Testament studies and a profound command of Semitic languages, including Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, and Ethiopic. His linguistic expertise enabled him to produce hundreds of studies on a diverse array of Oriental topics, contributing significantly to the academic landscape through translations, grammars, and literary analyses.

Among his notable collaborations was his work on Michael Jan de Goeje’s edition of al-Tabari's Tarikh, or Universal History, where he translated the Sassanid-era section. This translation is particularly valued for its extensive supplementary commentary, showcasing Nöldeke's depth of knowledge and insight.

Throughout his career, Nöldeke mentored numerous students, including prominent figures such as Charles Cutler Torrey, Louis Ginzberg, and Friedrich Zacharias Schwally. He entrusted Schwally with the continuation of his influential work, Geschichte des Qorāns, ensuring that his legacy would endure in the academic community.
